Muscat: The Oman Public Prosecution has released the magazine 'Society and Law', which covers some special articles as well as serious issues facing the society.

In this issue, it highlights two children's journey from a broken family to the trap of digital human trafficking

Five years ago, the security authorities received a report about two children, aged 14 and 16, who disappeared to an unidentified location after leaving their parents' home.

Following receipt of the report, ROP teams carried out a search to locate the two missing children and ascertain the cause of their disappearance. The crews were able to track them down and apprehend the criminals in question

Subsequent investigation reveals that the children's disappearance was motivated by the circumstances of their broken home rather than a sudden decision. In an interview, the two children confirmed that their primary motivation for leaving was to escape the ongoing violence and abuse they endured at the hands of their parents. They felt that the family is no longer a secure place to live as a result of the severe emotional trauma it caused, which forced them to seek refuge beyond elsewhere.

The two kids turned to entertainment sites, where human predators are active, because their parents had little control over their digital lives. They met the first suspect, who cultivate a fake world of trust with the two children while playing one of the well-known video games, where they found comfort and happiness.

By satisfying their emotional need, he enticed them over the phone and made plans for their escape to a specified location. By giving them food and a place to stay, he kept them under control. Their virtual world has changed from being a gaming environment to a confined world of slavery.

The two kids decided to flee and took a taxi from Muscat to the location of the child abuse offenses. They were given to the first suspect and his accomplices. The taxi was paid for by the initial suspect. He gave the kids instructions to discard their SIM cards to prevent them from interacting with anyone.

After that, they were moved to a room connected to his family's house and kept in total seclusion. To prepare the youngsters for the next phase of the crime, the perpetrators provided them with accommodation and everyday necessities. The deceptive mask of affection was immediately shed, and a new chapter of deadly organized crime began. The criminals revealed their true colors. The two children were taken advantage of and used as instruments for sexual trafficking. They attracted people via phone calls and WhatsApp messaging using the children's images. There were several instances of sexual assault against the boy. The perpetrators took money for forcing him to go out and have sex with other people.

The girl was not doing well. Several people abused her, one after the other. The first offender turned her innocence for illegal financial gain by arranging with men to go out with her and stealing the money.

Such a tale was not kept a secret for very long. To send a message to those who take advantage of children's innocence. The two defendants were convicted of various felony offenses, including child sexual exploitation and prostitution, and the misdemeanor of helping children to be delinquent. Additionally, the court found the first defendant guilty was sentenced to seven years in jail and a fine of RO10,000.

The second defendant was found guilty of child rape and given a five-year prison sentence along with a RO5,000 fine. Only the harshest sentence will be carried out after the sentences against him are combined.

The third and fourth defendants, who were found guilty of child rape and supporting youngsters in becoming delinquent, were sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of RO5,000, proving that other accomplices in the crime were not immune from punishment.

The article says that the facts of this case are outside the purview of criminal justice. It raises important questions about the function of the family in the contemporary world.

"Protection begins within the family. Due to the lack of emotional attachment in their families, children try to make up for it by using social media and video games, where parental control is virtually non-existent and at its weakest, with many backdoors deliberately left open to entice innocent children to be taken advantage of by criminals. To ensure that the next generation is shielded from exploitation and human trafficking, communities must reestablish parental and community authority despite the watchful eyes of our judicial and security services, which are working hard to reduce the impact of criminal networks.
